Soft Blankets

It’s really the very middle of winter here on the east coast of Australia. I live in the Southern Highlands, an hour and a half outside of Sydney. The mornings are icy, it’s school holidays, and it seems everyone (and their dog) have gone North to warmer climes.
But I’ve stayed put. My body won’t happily travel for long distances in the car. And, I have work to do, and dogs to look after.
And, tv to watch.
I, not so secretly, love a bit of reality tv. I used to feel ashamed of this until, in a talk I attended online with feminist writer and entrepreneur, Kelly Diels, she shared her theory on reality tv (the Real Housewives franchise, in particular) that, for the viewer, it’s a vicarious way to enjoy comfort, fantasy, and luxury, via seeing women on screen enjoy all those things. More specifically for me, it was seeing these people sitting sipping tea or cocktails on really plump couches surrounded by fluffy furnishings.
Over the months and years watching these shows, the soft aesthetic, and in particular, a modular lounge in a stunning minimalist house of Kim Kardashian (unfortunately, I have to credit Kanye West and his design vision) has sat snuggly in my mind.
So, I’ve secretly (there’s that word again) been wanting to recreate that cosiness in a corner of my house. Which leads me to fluffy blankets…
As fashion and design trends have a habit of seeping down into the mainstream consumer market, I recently saw a fluffy blanket Kim K style (and many other furnishings of that ilk) in a chain store…and I bought it. I’m mindful of fast fashion and textiles and I op shop and recycle most of the time but, dear reader, this blanket (and matching pillow cases!) is a delight.
As much as I’m pining to join the holiday train up North (and be near my beloved ocean), living this soft edge dream at home (with some fluffy four legged house guests) is a close second.
Here’s to living your soft edges dreams…
Till next week,
Rachel
